The Number 1 Reason for a Bad Night's Sleep

Posted on by Kathryn O'Hara

One bad night’s sleep affects our concentration, mood and alertness. Long term sleep-deprivation has much more serious health implications such as diabetes and heart disease. A good night’s sleep is just as important as a healthy diet or exercise, but it doesn't get the media coverage or the promotion that it deserves. Given that we spend one third of our lives in bed, it is time we realised the importance of sleep on our health. Worryingly, as many as a third of us get less than 6 hours of sleep per night.

A survey of over 5000 UK adults found that just a quarter of us think we sleep well most nights. 48% of those who sleep very poorly believe that nothing could be done to improve the quality of their sleep.

The survey also found that more than 1 in 10 Britons are bothered by their uncomfortable mattress. Not a surprising figure given that 14% of us have owned our mattress for more than 8 years.

Your Mattress is the biggest culprit.

Old mattresses are not able to offer us the support and comfort we once got, getting poked by springs when you’re trying to sleep is not ideal, nor is a sagging foam mattress that doesn't keep our spine aligned, causing us to wake up with back pain. What’s more, the hygiene of an old mattress doesn't bear thinking about. The recommended lifespan of a mattress is up to 8 years, so why do so many of us keep it for 15+?

If your mattress is over 8 years old, you’re likely to be sharing it with up to 10 million little dust mites. Although not parasitic (and preferring to feed on our dead skin), Dust Mites can contribute to the general household dust, which is a trigger for many asthma sufferers and allergies. It’s not the 8-legged arachnid itself that causes the reaction, but rather their faecal matter. Some estimates claim that around 10% of a 2 year old pillow is made up of dust mites and their droppings. Still happy with your current 10 year old mattress?

More than 1 in 5 of us think that buying a new mattress would have the most positive impact on sleep quality. Getting the right mattress that is comfortable for you is the most crucial element to a good night’s sleep. At Tweak, we believe that everyone deserves to get their best night’s sleep possible, every night. That’s why we developed the Tweak Mattress. Exclusively designed for couples, it allows both you and your partner to select your preferred level of comfort for your own side of the bed. It’s a bespoke mattress solution, allowing the two of you to get a good night’s sleep, without compromise.

The Tweak mattress is made up of 1,800 pocket springs to create a supportive base. This is then topped with a bespoke, dual comfort foam layer, where each of you choose your level of firmness to get the comfort just right. The cool blue foam layer allows for a refreshing night’s sleep using thermo-regulating technology, and the quilted cotton cover gives a luxurious finish to the mattress.

The customisable design means that you can switch the foam inserts if you decide you need a different level of comfort, plus you have 100 nights after delivery to try the mattress in the comfort of your own home to ensure you get the set-up best suited to the two of you. If you don’t love your Tweak mattress within the first 100 nights, we will collect it free of charge and refund you in full.
